My role as Designer
I introduced a method that would steer to thinking in causality instead of lineair progression. This led to better understanding the complexity of the problem.
Impact of the project
We could deliver very tanglible opportunities for the client in an otherwise highly complex and nearly impossible project.
Together with VLAIO, responsible for uplifting Flanders' innovation & entrepreneurship, we tackled the complex and wicked problem of transforming existing (older) industrial sites to be more sustainable.
To fully have an impact on sustainability, a more holistic design approach was used. Working with the common service design tools to build human centered solutions wasn't enough to fully comprehend the complexity of the problem. By switching to search for causality instead of linear connections, we uncovered deeper lying issues and unraveled ripple effects within the existing problems of transitioning an industrial site to be more sustainable.
These insights led to fast, easy, and impactful solutions for VLAIO to tackle or identify their role in. In order to help VLAIO in this process, we organized a multitude of co-creation workshops as well as deeper ideation sessions and validation workshops to fully identify which processes needed to be tackled first and what kind of responsibilities were asked from the organization initiating the process.
